Falken EMS App
The app can run stand-alone or in split-view mode on iPad, sharing the screen with an EFB application.
Engine Logging: Records engine performance data in industry standard CSV format, compatible with popular analysis software and websites.
EGT Peak-Finder: Helps pilots adjust the fuel mixture for optimal fuel efficiency.
EGT and CHT Trend View: Records exhaust gas temperature (EGT) and cylinder head temperature (CHT) readings on a time-sequence graph, allowing pilots to easily note any departures from the nominal operation.
Customizable Display: Enables users to tailor the app layout with assigning gauges, annunciators, and text indicators.
Split-view Layout: Supports split-view on iPads, allowing simultaneous use with other flight apps.
Customizable Limits: Allows users to set caution and warning alert points which correspond to color shifts (green = nominal, yellow = caution, red = warning) for immediate feedback.
Fuel Totalizer: Tracks fuel consumption over time, serving as a backup to the fuel level gauge.
Engine Power: Calculates the percentage of rated power being generated by the engine, specific to Lycoming and Continental engines.
Audio Alerts: Provides important notifications through the iOS device’s audio output (often tied to the pilot’s headset using Bluetooth).

The system includes a total of 29 inputs:
- 16 thermocouple inputs for EGT, CHT, TIT, OAT, etc.
- 8 analog inputs for pressure, fuel level, flap/trim position, etc.
- 2 tach inputs for engine speed
- 2 fuel flow inputs
- 1 amperage shunt input
Data collected by the EMS is relayed to the display and logging system over a Bluetooth wireless link when operating stand-alone (not integrated with an EFIS).
Sensor connections used reliable industrial spring-clip connectors to simplify the installation process. Rather than building a complicated wiring harness, probe leads connect directly to the spring-clips.
Falken EMS also includes RS-232 and CAN bus connectivity for hard-wired connectivity to other avionic systems. In an experimental aircraft, Falken EMS can interface with Falken’s FlightView EFIS, allowing owners to
upgrade one step at a time. In certified aircraft, Falken EMS can be tied into Falken’s FlightBox Pro NORSEE ADS-B receiver.
Engine probes and senders are sold separately, allowing the aircraft owner to select the optimal set of interfaces for their aircraft.
Q) What are the size and weight?
A) The box is 6.5″ (16.5 cm) wide x 3.66″ (9.25 cm) tall x 0.875″ (2.125 cm) tall. It weighs 9.5 ounces (270 grams).
Q) What are the power requirements?
A) It runs on 12v – 36v DC. At 13.8v it draw ~110 milliamps.
Q) What kinds of probes can be connected?
A) Falken EMS has inputs for:
- 16 thermocouples – J or K type
- 8 analog sensors with 0v – 5v range
- 2 positive signal frequency counters – typically used for RPM measurement
- 2 ground signal frequency counters – typically used for fuel flow or RPM measurement
- 1 millivolt amperage shunt input
This mix of inputs allows most common aviation sensor, senders, and transducers to interface with Falken EMS.
Q) How does the Falken EMS communicate data to the pilot.
A) In stand-alone installations (i.e. not integrated with an EFIS), Falken EMS communicates with a remote display system (typically the Falken EMS app on an iOS device) over a Bluetooth wireless link.
When installed in conjunction with an EFIS, it communicates using either RS-232 or CAN bus. The EFIS handles the display function.
Q) Does Falken sell probes for Falken EMS?
A) Not at this time. We currently recommend probes which are readily available from avionics and aircraft parts resellers. See the “Falken EMS Sensor Guide” for options.
Q) Where do I get the Falken EMS App?
A) It’s available from the Apple App Store. Search for “Falken EMS” or click this link from Safari on the iOS device.
Q) What iOS devices are supported?
A) iPads and iPhones running iOS 15 or later.
Q) How does the app get engine data from the EMS hardware?
A) In stand-alone mode, the app receives data from the EMS hardware over Bluetooth. If used with FlightView EFIS, the app receives data over Wifi or Ethernet.
Q) Can I design my own layout?
A) Yes, with a few constraints. You can select the gauges you want and place them in the order you prefer. The app supports either 3 or 4 rows of gauge items.
Q) What kind of gauges can the app display?
A) The app can display:
- Circle gauges – limited number per row
- Line gauges
- Dual line gauges – used for EGT & CHT display
- Binary annunciators – used for switch open / closed state
- Text gauges – basic text representation of engine data
Q) Can I set the gauge limit values for caution and warning?
A) Yes, the limit values can be configured for most data items. Caution values display in yellow. Warning values display in red.
Q) Does the Falken EMS app work with FlightView?
A) Yes, the Falken EMS app can display data from a FlightView system if the iOS device is connected to the FlightView via Wifi or Ethernet.
Q) What is FAA’s NORSEE policy and how does it work?
A) NORSEE (properly FAA Policy PS-AIR- 21.8-1602 for Non Required Safety Enhancing Equipment) permits the installation of equipment that is not required by any Federal regulation with the intent to measurably increase aircraft safety.
Q) So can I install Falken EMS in my Piper / Cessna / Beech / Grumman / Etc.?
A) Yes. The NORSEE approval makes Falken EMS eligible for installation as a minor alteration in most cases. Note that the category of an alteration must ultimately be determined by the installer.
Q) Can I replace the original steam gauge engine instruments with Falken EMS?
A) No. NORSEE gear can augment and even replicate required functionality but it cannot replace it. The official gauges are still the primary source of engine data and must remain.
Q) Are the probes also approved under NORSEE?
A) No, but many commercially available probes may be installed as either a minor or major modification. Check out the “Falken EMS Sensor Guide” in the documents section for details.
Q) Is NORSEE available outside of the USA?
A) NORSEE approval is accepted in Canada (see Transport Canada NCR-024-2022). There is no direct reciprocity with other CAAs. However, in some cases NORSEE data (the approval letter available in the Documents box) has been accepted for use in field approvals.
Q) Are there any differences between the NORSEE version and the experimental version of Falken EMS?
A) Only the data on the identification sticker on the bottom of the box. The electronics are identical.
